GUSTAF
SJÖKVISTS CHAMBER CHOIR was founded in 1994.
The choir
consists of thirty-four singers, many of whom are musicians by profession.
The choir
has always held an interest for contemporary music and has over the years
accumulated a broad repertoire in this field. This has lead to first
performances of music by Sven-David Sandström, Lars Edlund and others.
Collaboration
with international artists has been frequent, and the choir has produced
recordings with Barbara Hendricks, Håkan Hagegård and Edita Gruberova. The most recent
recording, “No Borders”, which features Barbara Hendricks, was released in
2005.
The choir
often tours with Mrs Hendricks; in December of 2005 the choir did a two-week
tour of France with her, and in February this year a concert was held in the
Cathedral of Verdun in commemoration of the WW1 battle of Verdun.
In the
spring of 2003 the choir participated in a French opera project led by the
baroque specialist Emmanuelle Haïm and featuring Anne Sofie
von Otter as soloist.
During
2002 and 2003 the choir collaborated with the a cappella group The Real Group
in a concert series spanning Sweden and Norway.
The choir
has toured regularly with a cappella programmes both within Sweden and abroad,
including tours in the USA and Taiwan.
Under its
own name, the choir has released recordings of works by Lars Edlund, Hugo Alfvén and Nils Lindberg.
Apart
from a cappella music, the choir’s repertoire includes oratorios such as the
Bach B-minor Mass and requiems by Brahms, Verdi, Mozart and Britten.
